In late September, the new Pennsylvania state royalty team was chosen. This group of three young ladies will promote dairy farmers and the dairy industry for the next year. Meet Brooke Emery, Sammy Haag and Kara Stulz!
Brooke Emery, the 2018-2019 Pennsylvania State Dairy Princess
I live on a small hobby farm in Alexandria, Pennsylvania, with my parents, Bill and Lisa Emery and 18-year-old brother, William.
On our farm we have Hereford beef cattle, Boer goats and Satin rabbits. I am currently a senior at Juniata College majoring in Pre-K to Fourth Grade Education. On campus, I am involved in Juniata Instructors of the Future, currently serving as their Secretary, am a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and am a choreographer for Dance Ensemble. Off campus, I am a member of the Shaver’s Creek Grange and the Alexandria Presbyterian Church.
A few years ago, I was asked to work on my neighbor’s dairy farm, Hill Crest Farm, to help feed calves twice a day, clean bedding and hutches and assisting in any way needed. Although I have not personally grown up on a dairy farm, I have spent a lot of time on the farm learning the ins and outs of the dairy industry. Currently, I lease show cows from Heron Run Farm to show at the Huntingdon County Fair.
From working on Hill Crest Farm and being surrounded by the cows, heifers and calves I grew to love, I also began to hear of the hardships facing the dairy industry. I saw people who I love struggling to make ends meet.
I decided to run for the title of Huntingdon County Dairy Princess. I knew I would have the opportunity to give farmers a voice through the county dairy promotion team. When I was crowned Huntingdon County Dairy Princess, I had one more goal in mind, to earn a spot among the top three at the state pageant.
At the end of September, I was honored and humbled to be crowned the 2018-2019 Pennsylvania State Dairy Princess! Along with Sammy Haag and Kara Stultz, who both share the same passion and love for the industry as I do, we will represent the state’s dairy industry as members of the state royalty team. Throughout the year, the three of us will work as a team and will go to many different places and events to promote the dairy industry. Not only do I have the privilege to represent the dairy farmers of Huntingdon County, I am also looking forward to learning, growing, and educating across the state with the help of Sammy and Kara!
Sammy Haag, the 2018-2019 Pennsylvania Alternate Dairy Princess
Growing up on dairy farm, I have always had a strong passion for the dairy industry and nothing has changed in my 20 years! I am Samantha Haag, the daughter of Mary and David Haag. Our family lives in Mohrsville, Pennsylvania next to our seventh generation Haag Family Farm. In 2010, my brother, Michael and his family became the next generation to farm when they took ownership of the farm. I also have two sisters, Brittany and Jessica, and a nephew Tylor.
Today, I am the wholesale and office manager at Way-Har Farm Market LLC, where I assist in managing the store front, making ice cream, taking care of all the dairy orders and pitch in wherever needed. Working here has helped to expand not only my knowledge of the dairy industry but my ability to communicate with customers and farmers.
I am proud of my dairy roots but my passion for horticulture is an equal love in my life. My father and I continue to learn the ways of my grandfather’s 14-acre orchard. I hope to one day run the orchard with my family. Recently, we have successfully earned our pesticide licenses and plan to further our education as we look to run our own agribusiness.
Representing the dairy industry as the 2018-2019 Pennsylvania Alternate Dairy Princess is now my focus. I have been involved in my county’s promotion program since I was the Berks County Lil’ Dairy Miss in 2005.
Since I was a little girl, I have dreamt of serving as a dairy princess. Our new state royalty team is so excited to serve dairy farmers across Pennsylvania!
Kara Stulz, the 2018-2019 Pennsylvania Alternate Dairy Princess
My journey in the dairy industry started on my family’s fourth generation dairy farm. My name is Kara Stultz and I am the 17-year-old daughter of Rob and Tammy Stultz of Williamsburg, Pennsylvania. I have a 19-year-old brother, Hunter, who works for Select Sire Power as a breeding technician and an 11-year-old sister, Rylee, who is currently in fifth grade at Martinsburg Elementary.
I am a senior at Central High School and plan to attend Penn State University to major in agribusiness next fall. Outside my duties as a dairy princess and being part of the county promotion team for the past several years, I am also involved in 4-H and FFA.
I am the 2018-2019 Central Cove FFA President, as well as President for Morrison’s Cove Dairy Club and Blair County Swine Club. Through both 4-H and FFA, I have exhibited dairy heifers, dairy beef, lambs, pigs and meat rabbits. I am also a member of the Central High School softball team and Fairview Church of the Brethren.
My family and I reside on a 200-acre dairy farm called Stultz Farm, where we milk 100 cows. Growing up on our farm has given me many opportunities and as I got older, my responsibilities changed from being able to spend hours just running around playing, to milking, feeding, scraping and cleaning barns, pen and hutches daily. These experiences have shaped me into the determined and passionate person I am today.
I am eager to learn even more about the amazing cows, people and the dairy industry that I’ve grown up surrounded by, and I cannot wait for my knowledge to be able to expand even more through my next role on the state royalty team.
Since I can remember, I’ve always dreamed of being the Blair County Dairy Princess, and that dream came true in May of this year. And now, I am beyond excited to help represent not only the county that grew my passion for the dairy industry, but also a state that has dairy as its top agriculture industry.
I cannot wait to see what this upcoming year has in store for our new team. Being able to tell the story of milk and dairy farmers is what I am looking forward to most this year.
